BlackHägen Design is a multidisciplinary, user-research and product design firm, supporting start-ups through Fortune 50 companies. Our pragmatic approach to product design is well suited to safety-critical and environmentally challenging industries and have a long-standing history serving those clients. At our core, user-centered processes drive innovation and sustainable product development. This systematic methodology for translating research insights into design requirements and creating valuable intellectual property has contributed to more than 100 patents and trade secrets over the last two decades.

We continuously optimize the quality of our methodologies and services through rigorous deployment of our Quality Management System, which is structured to be compatible with both 21CFR 820 (FDA) and ISO 13485, while easily adaptable to our clients’ in-house QMS for seamless documentation transfer.

Philip’s design and engineering background and training spans three continents over 30 years and a degree in Industrial Design/Transportation from California’s prestigious Art Center College of Design. Philip initially spent 8 years as an automotive designer, starting with Volkswagen in Germany followed by stints at several consulting firms in California. In 1993, he transitioned into Product Design and Project Management, culminating as Vice President of R&D and overseeing a medical device team of 60 before joining BlackHägen Design in 2002 as the Principal responsible for Design and Development.

Philip is a listed inventor on more than 30 design and utility patents to date, has managed and contributed to hundreds of projects from small to multi-million dollar budgets and supervised the critical transfer of numerous designs to domestic and offshore manufacturing. He is trained in ISO 9001/13485 directives and successfully implemented Design Control procedures at 2 previous companies. Philip has lectured at the Art Center and pioneered the first transportation design class at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and is a frequent subject matter expert and educational speaker at national conventions.

Sean earned a Bachelor of Science in Product Design from The Ohio State University’s Industrial Design program, minoring in human factors engineering. Sean has over 30 years of research and product development experience in a variety of industries ranging from marine transportation and mission critical, ruggedized electronics to medical devices.

Since founding BlackHägen Design in 1995, Sean has led design research and usability design across twenty countries. His current focus is in the management of the user research and insight translation phases of product development. That focus includes usability testing, user-centric innovation and establishing user requirements. Sean has published numerous articles on usability and design, as well as contributing to domestic and international standards for usability development processes as a member of the AAMI HE committee. In this role, he was a contributing author for AAMI TIR 50, 59 and ANSI/AAMI HE75. He was the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) Medical Section Chair from 2010 to 2017 and sat on the Board of Directors. Sean implemented the first IDSA Medical Design conference and is currently the Chair of the Patient Safety Taskforce. He is an active member of the Human Factors Ergonomics Society.
